Makei: Belarus' position on Russian airbase has not changed

Макей: Пазіцыя Беларусі наконт размяшчэння расійскай авіябазы не змянілася

Belarus’ position as regards the deployment of a Russian military airbase on its territory has not changed, Belarusian Minister for Foreign Foreign Affairs Uladzimir Makei said in Riga on July 7. Our Foreign Minister is paying an official visit to Latvia.

“The Belarusian President has commented on the issue of the deployment of additional military bases in Belarus recently. There were other official statements about it. Our position has not changed,” BELTA quotes Foreign Minister Makei as saying.

Belarus will keep analyzing the situation in the region thoroughly, the Minister noted. Belarus is not interested in making steps that would result in an increase of tension in the region and in Europe, he said.

“We are not interested in creating new lines of demarcation in Europe,” Makei said.

Neither Minsk, nor Moscow need a Russian airbase in Belarus, Alyaksandr Lukashenka announced earlier. There would be more drawbacks than advantages of deploying such a base here both for Belarus and Russia, he noted.
