Merkel objects to Putin's Hitler comparison
Germany's Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble says Russia's annexation of Crimea resembles Hitler's actions on the eve of WWII
He compared Russia’s occupation of Crimea to the way Adolf Hitler had annexed part of Czechoslovakia in 1938, UNIAN reports referring to PAP.
Russia’s actions arouse concern not only in Ukraine but also in the post-Soviet Baltic States, Poland and Hungary.
However, the occupation of Crimea ‘cannot be compared’ to the events in Czechoslovakia before the WWII, Angela Merkel said.
The leaders of Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany agreed on the annexation of the Sudetenland (an area of Czechoslovakia with a predominantly ethnic German population) by Germany in September 1938 in Munich. The German troops occupied the whole territory of Czechoslovakia a year later.
