Mikhail Gorbachev advertises legend whose hero is Lukashenka
“The only person who did not support the Belavezha Agreement was Alyaksandr Lukashenka”, - claimed a former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev in his interview given to a Russian newspaper “Rodnaya Gazeta”. Lukashenka has claimed it many times. He says he was the only person in the Belarusian Supreme Council who voted contra during the ratification of the Belavezha Agreement that put an end to the USSR. However, it is known that this is only a legend.
Stanislau Shushkevich who was the head of the presidium of the Supreme Council of Belarus in 1991 told ERB:
“Lukashenka did not take part in that voting. There was one person who voted contra. I am sure it was Valery Tsihinya, former head of the Constitutional Court and deputy secretary of ideology of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus.
The fact the Lukashenka did not take part in the voting is registered in documents”.
