Opposition activist Schukin gets $600 fine

A court in Vicebsk today sentenced famous human rights activist Valery Schukin to a fine of Br1, 240,000 for degrading the members of a local electoral commission.
He is to pay Br250,000 to one of the four plaintiffs who was seeking compensation for moral damages.

Under the verdict, Schukin must cover the court fees of Br93,000 and Br171,000 for taking part in the 1999 Freedom Marchy, the fee that he allegedly failed to pay.

Mr Schukin is going to appeal the ruling in a higher court.
