Opposition to meet Israeli Ambassador
Belarusian opposition leaders will meet Israeli Ambassador Iosif Shagal on February 14.
Nyaklyayeu, Alyaksei Yanukevich, Syarhei Kalyakin, Anatol Lyabedzka, Pavel Sevyarynets and Alyaksandr Milinkevich will take part in it.
Iosif Shagal’s statement about the absence for political prisoners in Belarus (he called them criminals) got a lot of publicity. The meeting will be dedicated to the statement.
Only two political prisoners have been invited to the meeting – Nyaklyayeu and Sevyarynets. Euroradio asked Nyaklyayeu if more political prisoners needed to be invited.
Nyaklyayeu: "The format of the meeting could be different – political prisoners and their relatives could be invited. But this format was suggested by the Ambassador – a meeting with opposition leaders and heads of parties and organizations.”
Nyaklyayeu does not think that oppositionists will have to convince Iosif Shagal of the existence of political prisoners in Belarus:
Nyaklyayeu: "It did not seem to me that Mr. Ambassador did not understand that these people were political prisoners and that they were innocent. He said that his statement was different: there are no political prisoners in Belarus as all of them are considered to be criminals according to the laws introduced in Belarus.”
The tomorrow’s meeting may become initiate the further dialogue with the Israeli Embassy, Nyaklyayeu thinks.
