Paint sprayed on Lenin monument in Mahiliou

"Long Live Belarus!" was on Saturday night was written with paint on the Lenin's monument at the central square in the city of Mahiliou. One-meter-high letters were removed in the morning only. A new local youth group titled "Independent United Youth" claimed responsibilty for the incident.

The group said it wanted to display with this action their protest against the current political course of the country. Yesterday, a police officier attempted to detain a youngster who was painting political graffiti on a wall of the house.

However, the young man sprayed paint into policeman's eyes and ran away. After several seconds, the police officer grabbed the paint can and threw it towards the youngster.

According to one of the leaders of this youth organization, more actions will soon be staged in order t mock the current government and the policy of the regime.
