Police detain youth activist in Minsk
Youth activist Zmitser Khvedaruk was on Thursday detained near the House of Justice in Minsk where he came to support Kanstantsin Lukashow, the brother to the prominent opposition politician. After the verdict was announced, Khvedaruk headed to a bus stop just to be detained by police agents.
Several minutes into his detention, Khvedaruk's friends received an sms-message from him saying that he was detained and was on the way to a police station. He would not elaborate on which district police station he was being taken to.
Youth activists link Khvedaruk's and other oppositionists' detentions over the past several days with the authorities's desire to isolate activists ahead of the opposition-planned rallies on July 27 in Minsk devoted to mark the day when the Declaration of the Belarusian Independence was signed.
According to the Solidarity Committee at Milinkevich-led For Freedom Movement, over 60 pro-democracy activists were detained from July 20 through July 24 across Belarus, reports Belapan.
