"Belposhta" celebrates Konstanty Kalinowski's anniversary
"Belposhta" has printed a special postcard dated for the 175th anniversary of January Uprising leader.
The festive cancellation of the new postcard was organized in the Main Post Office in Minsk on February 2. Everyone who bought the postcard on that day had a chance to put a unique stamp on them.
The print run of the postcard is 30 thousand issues. There is a painting by M.Ryzhy in it. The production of the postcard was followed by a little scandal. Editor-in-chief of the magazine "Belarusian Thought" Vadzim Hihin commented on it at a scientific conference dated for the anniversary of the uprising and called the initiative of "Belposhta" "officials' ignorance".
Konstanty Kalinowski was born in the village of Mostowlany , Hrodna Province (now in Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland)on February 2, 1838. He was a writer, revolutionary, democrat and one of the leaders of January Uprising (1863-1864) on the territory of modern Belarus and Lithuania.
He started publishing an illegal revolution newspaper Mużyckaja Praŭda in Belarusian in 1862-1863. Kalinowski was hanged by Russian soldiers in Lukiškės Square in Vilnius on March 22, 1864.
