CEC doors to close in front of UCP and BPF members on September 16
As soon as the parties candidates withdraw from the election, these parties will have no more CEC members with advisory capacity either.
Victar Karnyaenka from the United Civil Party and Ihar Lyalkou from the Belarusian Popular Front became members of the Central Elections Commission in an advisory capacity. However, these parties are not going to participate in the election till the very end. What will Karnyaenka and Lyalkou do at the CEC sessions when their candidates withdraw?
The CEC Secretary Mikalaj Lazavik warns - as soon as the candidates quit, they
will take away the shields with the surnames of Karnyaenka and Lyalkou from the
hall where the CEC sessions take place.
Mikalaj
Lazavik: "This is goodbye then! If
a party does not participate in the election then how their representatives may
participate in the Commission's work? They just gave up".
Victar
Karnyaenka is morally prepared that the CEC doors
will close in front of him on September 16. The UCP congress will take place
the day before that, on September 15, and they are highly likely to take a
decision on the candidates' withdrawal at it.
Victar Karnyaenka: "My time of working in the CEC is limited by the decision of the congress with regard to the future destiny of the candidates".
The BPF party congress will also take place on the same day - a weird
coincidence.
Ihar
Lyalkou: "We will take the final
decision on the candidates' withdrawal. Everyone will yield to the decision of
the congress".
However, Lyalkou is not sure that it will be easy to remove him from the CEC, even despite Lazavik’s warning.
Ihar Lyalkou: "This is unprecedented for Belarus and it should undergo certain procedural moments. I do not think it will be done automatically. This will be a new experience for me, and for Lazavik. "
For the three weeks of membership in the CEC Karnyaenka and Lyalkou are going to expose its true nature of the CEC. To do this, they just need to voice two suggestions.
Victar Karnyaenka: "The first one concerns counting of votes, the second one concerns the observers' rights. If our suggestions are declined, the commission will show its nature by itself".
Among the six national observers accredited to the CEC, there is also a representative of the BPF. His status after removal of party candidates will remain the same. However, he has no right to disclaim the violations.
