Ruling on Nasha Viasna registration case expected on Aug 11
The Supreme Court of Belarus today heard the case of Nasha Viasna human rights group against the Ministry of Justice. Human rights defenders were appealing the ministry's decision to deny registration to their organization. Lawyer Uladzimir Labkovich told Euroradio that both the representatives of the justice ministry and the founders of Nasha Viasna today spoke during the hearing.
In his view, officials were driven by political motives instead of laws when rejecting a registration for Nasha Viasna. For example, they asked the founders to explain in the statute what the name "Nasha Viasna" means.
Labkovich thinks that the hearing will be short. The ruling is likely to be issued by the court in the afternoon on August 11.
