Russia to launch construction of a pipeline to bypass Belarus
The Russian oil company Transneft is ready to start constructing a new pipeline to bypass the territory of Belarus, Transneft CEO Semyon Vainshtok said on June 14 during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. His company is just waiting for a go-ahead from the Russian government, Vainshtok said.
The new pipeline will be 1200km-long to connect the town of Unecha in the Briansk region with the Baltic port town of Primorsk in the Leningrad region. The new branch of the Baltic Pipeline System will be able to pump up to 50 billion tons of oil annually. The preliminary estimates suggest the project would cost around $2.5 billion, according to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
