UNESCO-listed castle bridge ruined in Niaswizh (photo)
Tractors had destroyed the top part of the ancient bridge before the museum director suspended works and called UNESCO experts. Alarming signals continue to come from the restoration site of the Radzivils' Palace in Niaswizh. First, builders ruined the whole three-storey gallery of the castle and restored, using modern bricks... Now time has come for the bridge which was built by Albrecht Radzivil in 1915. He is the father of 92-year-old Elzbeta Radzivil who visited the castle last year.
The bridge is being ruined, because it is allegedly prone to destruction. Sceptics point to the fact that over the past several years of reconstruction hard trucks used the bridge to cross into the palace without any problem. Valery Stalyarchuk, director of the museum Niaswizh, says: "All the works have been suspended. The paperwork have been sent to UNESCO and to the Department for Heritage Protection for consultations".
He admits that the bridge is prone to an accident, but is outraged that they are simply destroying it without preserving old elements and bricks.
