The Hungarian low-cost airline WizzAir may launch direct flights to Minsk, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tarde State Secretary Csaba Balogh told journalists.
A company representatives may visit Minsk for talks early next year, he said. Direct flights are important both for tourists and businessmen, he noted. Currently, there are 2 or 3 times a week between Belarus and Hungary.
"They offer cheap tickets but make money on other things: luggage and on-board services," director general of the airport Dzmitry Melikyan described the business model of low-cost carriers. "They would like to work here but we offer them the same services as to all the other airlines. They say: ‘Oh, no. We will be making money on luggage’. And then I refuse."
The company Belaeronavigation (the owner of Hrodna Airport) was negotiating with low-cost carriers in June. “This airport is close to Vilnius so we could at least get some of the passengers going there,” deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Alyaksei Lyahnovich explained.
To tell the truth, Hrodna Airport is not really convenient for low-cost airlines.
Csaba Balogh took part in the Belarusian-Hungarian business forum that was part of the 9th intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation. Representatives of 12 Hungarian and about 40 Belarusian companies attended the forum. Aspects of business cooperation between the two states were discussed there, BELTA reports.
