120 thousand Belarusians are serving their sentence or waiting for verdicts

The average term of imprisonment for Belarusians increased by 33% over the past 7 years.  The deputy head of the penalty execution department Vital Stukanau has informed about it.
According to him, the average term of imprisonment is 8 years now. Stukanau noted that it was “a rather high index”.

According to him, a prisoner stops perceiving the sentence as a penalty after 3 years and 7 years of imprisonment result in a complete decay of personality. There are about 120 thousand people registered in the department as of November 1, 2007. 36 thousands are imprisoned and are serving their sentence in labour camps, 680 – in prisons, 7 thousands are in confinement cells, 3.6 thousands are in labour preventoriums, 1170 in confinement houses, 6700 are in open correctional institutions and 65 thousands are registered in criminal inspectorates.
