20:38 Belarus set to sell fresh air
Belarus plans to earn millions of dollars by selling the quotas for the green gas emissions. This can be made possible thanks to the Kyoto Protocol, which this country joined three months ago.
Belarus has been allocated a national quota of 40 million of CO2 emissions per year. But, the local industries contaminate the atmosphere in significantly lesser amounts, thus allowing the country to sell part of the Kyoto quota to the so called "dirty" countries.
One ton of the green gas emmissions currently costs from $5 to $12. Belarus can earn around $400 million by selling its fresh air.
However, the Belarus Ministry for Protection of Nature and Natural Resources said that this country would not put the whole 5-year national quota on sale. Some reserve would be kept for the national economy.
