Alyaksei Yanukevich: Single opposition candidate a hopeless idea
The leader of Belarusian Popular Front reckons a single opposition candidate is not a viable option but there is no alternative to it.
The opposition is unlikely to reach an agreement and choose the single candidate for the presidential election-2015, he believes. However, Yanukevich is sure that there is no alternative to this idea.
The main problem is not the opposition’s performance at the elections, Yanukevich thinks. “It is not clear whether we will be able to preserve the subjectivity of the democratic forces,” he stressed. An agreement is unlikely to be reached within the next few months unless ‘new methods of work are used’, the politician thinks. In particular, he suggested making meetings open to the press – such civil pressure may produce a positive effect on the level of responsibility of some participants of the process.
The congress of the democratic forces may not be held until an agreement on its procedure is reached, Yanukevich noted. At best, it will be held at the beginning of the next summer, the BPF leader thinks.
