Belarus MPs to set presidential elections date
The Central Elections Commission proposed to hold the elections on October 11. Lukashenka also expects the House of Representatives to approve it.
On Tuesday, June 30, the House of Representatives may approve the date of presidential elections in Belarus. Initially, the polls were expected to take place in November. However, the Central Elections Commission (CEC) later proposed to hold the election on October 11. CEC chairwoman Lidziya Yarmoshyna is expected today to speak at the final plenary meeting of the 7th session of the House of Representatives to explain her reasoning in support of the proposed date.
Euroradio reported earlier Aliaksandr Lukashenka said last week that he expected MPs to back the proposal and set the date of the presidential polls for October 11 (video). This position is shared by the chairman of the House of Representatives Uladzimir Andreychanka. "Generally, I feel the mood of the deputies. We reckons this is the optimal date. I think this proposal of the Central Elections Commission will be supported by MPs," Andreychanks is quoted as saying by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
On June 29, opposition figure Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu called on all potential candidates to withdraw from the elections, because no oppoisition structure will be able to collect 100 000 signatures required in order to register as a candidate. He proposed to nominate political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich as the opposition's single candidate.
