Belarusian spy stands trial in Vilnius

Vilnius Circuit Court is considering the case of former medic of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Andrei Ashurkau. He is accused of spying for Belarus. He is standing trial behind the closed doors.

The court finished interrogating witnesses and presented the case papers on Thursday, ru.delfi.lt reports. Several more hearings are planned, prosecutor of the General Prosecutor’s Office Radas Savitskas said. One of them will be held on September 3.

Ashurkau served in Algirdas battalion. He was detained in January 2014. According to the investigators, Belarusian special services recruited Ashurkau and helped him join the Lithuanian Armed Forces on purpose. He is suspected of selling information to Belarus for 5 years. Ashurkau pled guilty in April.

Ramuald Lipski suspected of spying for Belarus is also standing trail in Lithuania. He has pled not guilty.
