Brest City Executive Committee officials elected in 7 minutes
The hasty decision is illegal and should be appealed in court, reckon local pro-democracy activists.
The meeting of the presidium of the city council and City Executive Committee was held on December 27. The creation of Brest city territorial election commission was discussed there.
The meeting took less than 8 minutes. 13 members were chosen out of 20 candidates. No opposition representatives became members of Brest city election commission.
The members were chosen in advance, human rights defender Uladzimir Vyalichkin said.
Vyalichkin: "It was clear that the candidates were not discussed. The decision was made in advance. The chosen members are controlled by the authorities and will act for their benefit.”
Local human rights defenders and democratic activists lodged a complaint to the regional court. They demanded to recreate the commission and discuss all the candidates. However, their appeal was not satisfied. Judge Anatoli Litouchyk claimed that he had no authority to consider such a case.
The activists are going to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.
