Duke Algerd who besieged Moscow arrives in Viciebsk: in pictures
The monument of Grand Duke Algerd of Lithuania arrived at the Market Square in central Viciebsk on June 24.
Duke Аlgerd arrived in Vitsebsk separately from his horse, as the two parts of the sculpture were transported in two seperate vehicles. The site was visited by Aliaksandr Kosinets, chairman of Vitsebsk Regional Administration, who said after taking a look at the monument that it was the best sculpture in Belarus, reports Narodnyaja naviny Viciebska.
The Duke Algerd Monument will be solemnly unveiled on June 27 at 1500 during the celebrations of 1040 years since the foundation of Viciebsk.
During his rule, Duke of Viciebsk(1320 — 1345), Grand Duke of Lithuania (1345 — 1377) Algerd expanded the territory of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, fighting successfully with Teutonic knights, Tatars and Muscovites.
