Ex-deputy Prosecutor General imprisoned for 6 years in Belarus
A Belarus court finds former deputy Prosecutor General Aliaksandr Arhipau guilty of office abuse and bribery.
Ex-speaker of the House of Representatives and head of the Belarusian Handball Federation Uladzimir Kanaplyou (in the photo) has been fined for 900 base amounts (135 million roubles) for failure to report the crime, BELTA reports.
Journalists were only allowed to attend the delivery of the sentence. It was a closed hearing.
Alyaksandr Arhipau was accused of closing a criminal case started against a businessman’s son. The young man ran over a 24-year-old girl on his motorcycle. He had no driving licence. The girl died. Arhipau got a gold bar and a bottle of cognac for it, Alyaksandr Lukashenka announced in April.
