FC Zenit Saint Petersburg refutes racism accusations
An ex-player has claimed that he was not allowed to play in the first team due to the colour of his skin.
FC Zenit Saint Petersburg is refuting the racism accusations pronounced by its ex-player Brian Idowu. The Nigerian player was born in Saint Petersburg but plays for Perm Amkar now.
Zenit did not allow him to play in the first team due to his skin colour, Idpwu claims. They told him that the club’s fans did not like black football players and would not be glad to welcome them in the pitch.
Idowu was just not good enough for the Russian Premier league, Zenit Academy director Hank van Stee claimed. He rarely appears in the pitch even in Amkar, he added. The team is about to drop out of the National Football League.
FIFA has expressed anxiety in connection with racism in Russian stadiums many times. Russia will host the World Football Cup in 2018, BBC reports.
