G7 threatens Russia with economic sanctions
The G7 leaders met in the Dutch PM’s residence in the Hague on Monday evening.
The members of the Group of Seven threaten to impose economic sanctions on Russia, RIA Novosti reports. It will happen if the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine continues.
The official report says: “We are ready to enhance the actions that will produce a major effect on the Russian economy if Russia continues escalating the situation.”
The G7 leaders will not attend the G8 summit in Sochi – they will gather at their own summit in Brussels in June, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy wrote on Twitter.
The G7 consists of the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan. The summit has been organized without Russia for the first time since 1996, BBC notes. Russia was a member of the G8 but this group does not exist anymore, world leaders say.
