German MFA: Sanctions may be imposed on Ukraine
German Minister for Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier has claimed it.
He threatened the Ukrainian authorities with negative consequences if they deviate from looking for a political solution to the conflict with the opposition, RBK reports. It is necessary to be firm as regards the Ukrainian authorities and the readiness to impose sanctions should be a threat for Kiev, the German diplomat stressed.
Steinmeier also cautioned against the possible EU-Russia competition for Ukraine on the basis of the ‘who pays more’ principle. Both the EU and Russia should be interested in Ukraine recovering as soon as possible. The situation in Ukraine is still explosive, he noted.
Nevertheless, Germany is not considering the possibility of imposing sanctions on Kiev now, Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
