Independence Restoration Day marked in Belarus today
The Independence Restoration Day is marked in Belarus today. The BSSR Supreme Council gave the status of the constitutional law to the State Sovereignty Declaration adopted a year before on August 25, 1991. It happened after the failure of the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt in Moscow. The pro-communist majority of the Supreme Council voted for Belarus’ independence from Moscow under the pressure of the BPF opposition and the meeting of many thousands in Independence Square. The historic white-red-white flag and Pahonya emblem became the state symbols a month later.
The Ukrainian Parliament declared independence on August 24. Our southern neighbours officially mark their Independence Day on August 24. Belarus marks the holiday unofficially.
The Soviet Union was dissolved after the Belavezha Accords had been signed in December 1991.
A meeting with members of the Supreme Council who managed to restore the Independence of Belarus in 1991 will be organized in Minsk on August 25.
