Italians tried to adopt 200 children from Belarus but failed

Two hundred Italian families are unable to finalize the adoption of Belarusian children, writes local publication Il Restodelcarlino.

In 2020, then Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte refused to sign a special letter of guarantee, which should have included a list of adoptive children. Not out of malice - but because the EU did not recognize Aliaksandr Lukashenka as president of Belarus. But since Belarus did not receive the letter, the adoption process was blocked.

Italian families trying to complete the process demanded that their government solve the problem. And in April 2021, Italy did send Belarus the necessary letter - but it was signed by then-Family Minister Elena Bonetti, not Prime Minister Conte.

"But for Belarus, the letter not signed by Conte is nothing more than waste paper," writes the Italian edition.

However, Italian journalists say there's still hope for Belarusian children and their Italian families. The letter of guarantee, which was not signed by Conte three years ago, is now on the desk of the current Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni.

Italians fight for the opportunity to adopt Belarusians

The Association Adozioni Alfabeto, which is in contact with families who have started the adoption procedure, appealed to the Council of State (a judicial body in Italy). But they supported the position of the former Prime Minister: the refusal to sign the letter giving the green light to the adoption is a political act and the government has the right to do so.
