Klimau was released without a petition. Will the same happen to Kazulin?
Members of the presidential commission on citizenship and pardon say that nobody would even consider the issue of pardon without a petition written by the prisoner or his or her relatives. They also claimed that Andrei Klimau’s mother wrote a petition for him. But the politician refutes it. Trying to find out on what condition a prisoner could be released and whether it was necessary to write a petition to the corresponding commission, ERB talked to a member of the Commission of citizenship and pardon, the head of the Commission on national security Anatol Belasheuski. According to him, nobody would even discuss the issue of pardon without a petition of the prisoner. He claimed that there was a petition for Andrei Klimau. However, the politician did not write it, it was done by his mother.
Anatol Belasheuskі: “We discussed it at a meeting of the commission. As far as I remember it was his mother who addressed us. A decision was taken about him and the President must have agreed to the decision of the commission”.
Andrei Klimau said in an interview with ERB that he had not written any petition asking for pardon and had not even considered such a possibility.
Andrei Klimau: “The President probably took the decision from his personal considerations. I cannot say what kind of considerations they were. But, of course, I have never written any petitions”.
According to the former deputy of the Supreme Council of the 13th convocation, his mother did not do it either.
Andrei Klіmau: “If my mother had decided to write a petition she would have discussed it with me first of all. As far as I know she did not write any petitions”.
He also claimed that she would have never done it without his knowledge. Just because she felt his reluctance to write a petition to the President.
Andrei Klіmau: “My mother, like Caesar's wife, must be above suspicion. And I am not going to insult her with my incredulity”.
Talking to a member of the Commission on pardon Anatol Belasheuski, ERB wondered whether the commission had received any petition from Kazulin or his relatives.
Anatol Belasheuskі: “I cannot give you the exact answer whether we have documents about Kazulin now. There were not any during the last meeting of the commission”.
Nevertheless, Andrei Klimau is sure that Kazulin is likely to be released one of these days. The politician thinks that a petition of relatives or the prisoner is not necessary for the President’s pardon in our country.
Andrei Klimau: “I have no doubt he will be released soon. Maybe it will not happen today, but we will see him in Minsk after a short period of time, maybe after March 2 and there will be no restrictions connected with the necessity to serve his sentence”.
He explained it by the fact that Lukashenka was trying to establish closer relations with the European Union. So he has to carry out all the 12 demands of Europeans.
Andrei Klimau: “It is evident that he has taken a decision to establish closer relations with the European Union. I am sure that the decision is not a spontaneous one. A new stage of relations of our country with Russia and the European Union will start on March 3. It proves that the European Union’s demands will be carried out”.
