Kolas: Single candidate should be picked by Sep 7

Uladzimir Kolas says no decision to pull out the Council of Belarusian Intelligentsia from the process of selecting the single candidate was taken during the roundtable meeting. It was just a proposal by potential contender Mikola Statkevich, but since there was no quorum and the proposal could not be approved, it was not considered.
According to Uladzimir Kolas who chairs the Council of Belarusian Intelligentsia, the June 11 roundtable meeting discussed a draft appeal from the United Pro-Democracy Forces (UDF) to the democratic community. The appeal is urged by the changed attitude of the Russian authorities towards the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Kolas reckons this gives the Belarusian opposition a chance to win but only if there is the single candidate. That's why it was proposed to enter a separate paragraph on the single candidate in UDF's electoral strategy.

Kolas proposes to pick the single candidate by September 7, the day when the House of Representatives -- the lower chamber of the National Assembly -- will gather for an unscheduled session.
