Latvian Foreign Minister: Belarus sanctions need to be reconsidered

It is necessary to reconsider the EU sanctions imposed on Belarus, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgar Rinkevich thinks.

The Latvian official mentioned the recent release of six Belarusian political prisoners. He is glad that the EU-Belarus dialogue has been activated while Latvia is presiding in the European Union. “We have been working with the EU and Belarus a lot and I think that the sanctions policy should be reconsidered now,” rus.delfi.lv quotes Rinkevich.

"If sanctions are a means of realisation of a certain policy, the EU should make a step forward because political prisoners have been released,” the Latvian Minister for Foreign Affairs noted.

Latvia would like to include the issue on the EU agenda. The European Union should demonstrate its positive reaction to the changes for the good in Belarus, Rinkevich believes.

Belarus sanctions may be discussed at the next meeting of the EU Ministers in Luxemburg on September 4 and 5.
