Lukashenka forbids kowtowing to IMF
Alyaksandr Lukashenka has commented on the relations with the International Monetary Fund again. It happened at a meeting dedicated to the efficiency of the social-economic complex. Belarus is still interested in cooperation with the fund, Lukashenka said.
Lukashenka: “We need to cooperate with the IMF. They have suggested rational things. But do not kowtow [to the fund]. The people’s interests are the top priority! We should not bow and scrape before anyone.”
If the IMF wants to cooperate with Belarus, they need ‘to listen to us too’, the state leader stressed. If they do not want to do it, ‘we will wait’, Lukashenka said. Russia will help Belarus ‘by means of the Eurasian Development Bank’, he reminded.
Belarus has been hoping to get a $3bn credit from the IMF for a long time. However, the International Monetary Fund is taking its time. It is probably waiting for Belarus to fulfill certain conditions.
