March for mass actions may be written by Volski and advised by Hamenka

Ihar Varashkevich thinks that a democratic march to the music of the official anthem is “far-fetched”. Alyaksandr Kulіnkovіch is against any march. Lyavon Volski would not mind writing a march song for democrats. Aleh Hamenka reminded that there were a lot of old soldier’s march songs. Alyaxandr Pamidoroff thinks that a democratic march to the music of an old song about Stalin can only insult people.
The deputy head of the Belarusian Social-Democratic Party (Hramada) Ihar Rynkevich read aloud the lyrics of the march written by an unknown poet at a meeting on April 9. The march is supposed to be sung during “mass manifestations of the democratic forces”. Members of “Hramada” suggested using the melody of the official anthem of Belarus for it. ERB asked famous Belarusian rock musicians what march they could offer instead of that one.

The leader of N.R.M. Lyavon Volski thinks that hymns and marches should be available in all organizations – from parties to catering institutions.

Lyavon Volskі: “Every party should have its anthem. Our parties either use something they already have or nothing at all. A unique song should be available in every party, in every small organization, restaurant and bar”.

However, the musician would not like to write a party hymn. But he could share his ideas about such a march.

Lyavon Volskі: “If there were any requests, I would certainly think about it and take a decision. However, it is too early to say whether it would be a battle song or not. I don’t think it would be a battle hymn because we do not stick to the style “Rush to the attack singing!”. I doubt it should be written. There are no operations here. However, situations of the kind can be observed once in a while”.

The leader of “Krama” Ihar Varashkevich says that the idea of writing new lyrics to the music of an old official anthem is a thankless idea looking really “far-fetched”. He also thinks it is not necessary to write anything people should be singing at a party meeting or in a camping site.

Іgar Varashkevіch: “It would be far-fetched in any case. Especially if the lyrics are new and the music is the same. Nothing should be written on purpose. There can be nothing artificial about music. If young people like singing “Three turtles”, let them do it. I can’t imagine people singing our song “Commandant”. I’m sure nobody will sing it in a camping site”.

Alyaksandr Kulіnkovіch, the leader of “Neuro Dubel” claims that nobody is interested in party anthems but for the party administration. That is why he is against them. He does not think young people should be suggested anything they should use as a march for manifestations either. He says that the youth are able to decide and chose what to sing.

Alyaksandr Kulіnkovіch: “I think that a march is a bad idea. I do not think anything should be suggested to the youth. If young people want to sing, let them chose and sing what they like – for example, “Balloon”. Let them sing something else if they like it”.

The leader of “the Dubels” will not accept any orders of the kind. He said he would not be able to do it. Especially if it were a march or an anthem.

Alyaksandr Kulіnkovіch: “I would not be able to perform such a task. I’m not very close to such things. Performing a task, especially when it is not to your liking, is a kind of self-violence”.

The leader of “Zhyhimont Vasa” Syarhei Skrypnichenka vigorously rejects the idea of anthems written on purpose too. In his opinion, songs are not written as anthems, they can only become anthems.

Syarhei Skrypnіchenka: “It cannot be done on purpose. Some songs become anthems when many people perceive them this way. If you are trying to impose something it becomes “lukamol” (“Lukashenka’s Young League”).

The leader of “Palace” Aleh Hamenka does not understand the necessity of creating of a new march song either. Especially when it means using the music of the old official anthem. According to him, there are many songs of the kind in the musical history of Belarus. He would suggest one of them if he was asked to. He would only make a modern arrangement for it.

Aleg Hamenka: “There are a lot of national Belarusian songs and marches. Just think about our historical heritage and our soldier’s and march songs. There is everything we need, why write anything else?! Why not use it during some manifestations?”

The idea of writing a democratic anthem to the music of the official anthem is a pseudo initiative, thinks Alyaksandr Pamidoroff. This initiative dates back to the Soviet epoch and insults Belarusians.

Alyaksandr Pamіdoroff: “The fact that the song “We are Belarusians” that used to be a song about Stalin is used for it only proves that the people are very much connected with the Soviet past. It does not matter what lyrics they use – patriotic or uber-patriotic. If you mention Litvins and the European Union in such a song it is absurd and it insults the people who care about the state, the country, the society and their own life”.

He suggested using “Bayonets up, walk ahead!” as a march song.
