Meeting of Congress of Democratic Forces organizing committee held in Minsk
The first meeting of the organizing committee of the Congress of Democratic Forces was held in Minsk on December 29. The congress is appointed for spring 2016 for ‘the public consolidation of the Belarusian society’.
Ex-presidential candidates Mikalai Statkevich and Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu, trade union leader Henadz Fyadynich, ex-judge of the Constitutional Court Mihail Pastuhou and leader of the solidarity movement Razam Vyachaslay Siuchyk took part in the meeting. The decisions of the committee were approved by ex-head of the Supreme Council Stanislau Shushkevich, ex-presidential candidate Andrei Sannikau who will be represented by European Belarus activist Maksim Vinyarski and one of the Young Front leaders Zmitser Dashkevich, Radio Liberty reports.
There are 8 people in the committee and there will be no communists and KGB members among them, Mikalai Statkevich said. The goals of the congress were adopted: the consolidation of democratic forces, elaboration of their joint strategy and a strategy of Belarus development and preservation.
Delegates for the congress should be chosen at meetings in the provinces, Statkevich thinks. Even if the administrations of some organizations do not support the idea, their members may be represented at the congress. However, it would be better to avoid such a situation, the opposition politician noted.
