Minskers demand to remove Lenin monument
Activists from the Czech Republic-registered international youth organization Malady Front have filed an application with the Ministry of Culture of Belarus, demanding to remove the Lenin monument in Minsk from the list of historical and cultural heritage sites, Malady Front press secretary Tatsiana Shaputska told the Belapan news agency. The application was signed by Anastasia Palashena, Anastasia Loika and Aliaksei Yanusheuski and filed on November 28.
But Anton Astapovich, the chairman of the Belarusian Society for Protection of History and Cultural Heritage Sites, has a negative attitude to this initiative. "Firstly, letters should not be sent to the Ministry of Culture. Such a proposal should instead be filed with the methodologiacl council on history and cultural heritage under the culture ministry. Secondly, the monument is located in front of the House of the Government and a relevant decision of the Council of Ministers has to be passed", Astapovich said.
