Nadezhda Savchenko becomes PACE delegate
Meetings in support of the imprisoned Ukrainian pilot are being held worldwide.
A PACE session opened in Strasbourg on January 26. Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Svachenko who became a member of Batkivshchina on October received the status of an official delegate there. It may make Russia stop prosecuting her, Radio Liberty notes.
Savchenko is accused of being connected with the death of Russian journalists in East Ukraine in the summer of 2014.
The Russian delegation sees the situation in a different way, head of the State Duma International Affairs Committee Aleksei Pushkov said. According to him, PACE members have immunity when they are fulfilling their duties. For instance, they are granted immunity during PACE sessions. However, it has nothing to do with their actions before they received the status.
Actions of solidarity with Savchenko have been held in 30 countries since Saturday. People demand to release the pilot. The BPF Party also conducted d a solidarity action with the Ukrainian pilot who is on hunger strike in prison now. She is protesting against her illegal arrest.
