Obama and Merkel warn Russia of possible sectoral sanctions
U.S. President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have given a joint press conference in the White House.
New sanctions which will affect the whole sectors of its economy may be imposed on Russia, they announced. It will happen if the Kremlin does not stop its ‘destructive behaviour’, BBC reports.
The sanctions are not meant to punish Russia – they are needed to stimulate it to choose a better course, Barack Obama stressed. Germany supports the current Ukrainian government and is looking forward for May 25 presidential election, Angela Merkel said.
Meanwhile, the confrontation of the Ukrainian riot police with pro-Russia militants continues in Ukraine. Moscow called the Ukrainian authorities’ action ‘a punitive expedition’.
