Only 1.6% of Minsk pupils studied in Belarusian in 2013
Only 148 classes study in the mother tongue in the Belarusian capital Minsk.
It was announced by Mikhail Mironchyk, chairman of the Education Committee of Minsk City Executive Committee.
"Over the past five years, these figures dropped by half. There is some evidence that just cause resentment... In individual regions over the past three years out of 16 senior pre-school groups only one was left this year, and there are no Belarusian-language classes in secondary and upper-secondary schools at all," the official was quoted by BelaPAN.
At the same time the head of the Committee noted that there are enough parents who want to send their children to Belarusian language kindergarten groups and Belarusian language classes. However, they don't get attention.
