Poroshenko wants to abolish Donets Basin’s special status
The law on the special status of a number of districts of Donets and Lugansk Oblasts was adopted after Minsk agreements.
The Ukrainian President announced his intention on November 3 – a day after the so-called elections in self-declared Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Poroshenko called the elections a farse at gunpoint. Ukraine will never recognize such elections.
The abolishment of the special status will be discussed at a meeting of the Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council on Tuesday, November 4, Ukrainian mass media report.
Decentralisation of power will remain a key element of the political settlement of the conflict in Donets Basin, the Ukrainian President stressed. Ukraine will be ready to adopt a new law if all the sides stick to the agreements reached in Minsk.
