Putin to Lukashenka: Nothing catastrophic is happening
The Belarusian and Russian presidents talked on the phone on March 11. They discussed the Russian economy and situation in Ukraine.
Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Vladimir Putin discussed the situation at the Russian money market. Nothing catastrophic is happening and the situation is ‘natural’, Vladimir Putin stressed. Russia has enough resources to keep the economy stable, the Russian president assured.
It is clear why the issue was discussed, while the EU and US are preparing to impose economic sanctions on Russia in response to its incursion in Crimea.
Alyaksandr Lukashenka informed Vladimir Putin about... the local elections that will be held in Belarus on March 23, BELTA reports. The Russian president learnt that our country was ready to conduct them "at a high level".
The president also discussed the situation in Ukraine. The official information about this part of their conversation is rather brief: Lukashenka and Putin "expressed mutual understanding of the necessity of the development of the situation for the benefit of the Ukrainian people and all inhabitants of Ukraine".
Lukashenka did not publicly support Russia’s actions in Crimea. The Belarusian president’s statements on “the Ukrainian issue” are very cautious. Most of them are conclusions that need to be made to avoid a similar situation in Belarus.
