HR defenders: We need more information about Haidukou
Rights activists in Belarus say they risk getting embarrassed in the future, if they recognize Andrei Haidukov as political prisoner without proper checks
Human right activists do not have enough information about the reasons behind Andrei Haidukou’s detention, rights defender Lyudmila Hraznova told Euroradio. Lawyers are not in position to make comments on this case, because they signed a confidentiality statement.
Hraznova: “We cannot say that there are underlying political reasons for it. We have no insider information. I think we should not be in a hurry. We may get into a some mess… It may affect human rights defenders, the opposition and it may even result in a scandal.”
Many questions arose after human rights activists had met Haidukou’s friends. “They behaved very strange,” Hraznova said.
Pavel Sevyarynets had demanded earlier to ask politicians, human rights activists and the international community about the need to announce Andrei Haidukou a political prisoner.
Andrei Haidukou, 23 from the city of Navapolatsk was detained by KGB agents on November 8, 2012. He was “making a cache of information a foreign intelligence could be interested in,” official sources report. He is facing state treason charges and may be imprisoned for 7-15 years.
