There are over 1,400 political prisoners in Belarus
Aliaksandr Lukashenka has announced the release of some political prisoners in Belarus. "Don't be surprised if some very seriously ill people are released in a few days. Mostly with cancer," he said on July 2 at a solemn meeting dedicated to Belarus' Independence Day.
Today there are more than 1,400 political prisoners in Belarus. Human rights activists write that at least 91 political prisoners have serious health issues. At least seven political prisoners with oncological diseases are behind bars. The activist of "European Belarus" Andrei Voynich is terminally ill and urgently needs a liver transplant. Among the political prisoners is a cancer patient, 67-year-old Ryhor Kastusiou, former leader of the BPF party. Journalist Ksenia Lutskina, a political prisoner, was diagnosed with cancer in prison.
