Opposition begins backstage talks on single presidential candidate for 2015
One party and two civil initiatives have joined the negotiations so far.
The opposition started secretive consultations to determine a single
candidate for the presidential election 2015. Leader of the "For
Freedom" movement Alyaksandr Milinkevich told Euroradio that
three structures have taken part in the negotiations so far - the movement
"For Freedom", the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) and the civil campaign "Tell the
Truth."
Milinkevich: "The authoritarian regime requires consolidation in the form
of choosing a single candidate. We are working on this, behind the scenes, and
we have achieved some results. I think we can work this out, at least the
approach. "
The politicians didn’t want to share the preliminary results of the
negotiations. However, he pointed out that if there is no single candidate in
the presidential election 2015, it will be senseless to participate in it. The
boycott will make no sense either.
Milinkevich: "It is necessary to participate in the presidential campaign.
Any more boycotts will only discredit us furthermore. However, there’s no sense
in participation in the election without a single candidate. I think it is just
a shame to go there as a group of different people, with different programs and
different goals”.
Milinkevich hopes that "large groups of democratic community" will
join the mentioned three structures soon and they will try to define a common
approach to the presidential election together.
