Russian air base protesters summoned to court
The participants of the unauthorized action For Peaceful, Neutral Belarus held in the centre of Minsk on October 4 will stand trial in Minsk's Central District Court today. Leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka, ex-presidential candidate Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu, former political prisoner Mikola Statkevich and several more activists have been summoned to court.
The people who protested against the plans to deploy Russian air bases in Belarus are accused of violating the procedure of organizing a mass action. Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu said early he would not appear in court because he does not trust the Belarusian judicial system.
About 400 people attended the protest in Freedom Square. Two days later, Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka announced Belarus did not need Russian air bases.
