Russian human rights defender dies in Ukraine

Russian human rights defender Igor Shuvalov has died in Debaltsevo, Ukraine. He was a human rights defender in Saint Petersburg and became a tankman in the so-called ‘Lugansk People’s Republic’ on the side of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Shuvalov defended the White House in Moscow in 1993 and fought in Yugoslavia alter, Rosbalt reports. He went to Donetsk in the summer of 2014. He brought a group of young men with him. The former human rights defender moved to Lugansk and trained to be a tankman there. He started commanding a tank platoon and became an officer.  

Igor Shuvalov returned to Saint Petersburg several times but headed back for Donets Basin every time. He took part in the militants’ assault of Denbaltsevo in February. The Russian was severely wounded on February 10. He died three days later. Shuvalov was about 60 years old. He was buried in Russia.
