Sannikov refuses to be nominated by Counci of Intellectuals
The Council of Belarusian Intellectuals wishes to become a platform to nominate the opposition's single presidential candidate. But only Andrei Sannikov has refused from cooperating with the council. The council decided to hold a roundtable meeting over the nomination of the opposition's single candidate for the presidential elections in 2011. Politicians Mikalai Statkevich, Vital Rymasheuski, Lyavon Barshcheuski, Alyaksandr Yarashuk and Alyaksandr Kazulin agreed with this decision. Viktar Karnienka from the Movement for Freedom said his organization would decide on their position in late April.
Commenting to Euroradio, Andrei Sannikov who early announced his presidential ambitions explained the reasons for his refusal. He said: "I see no point in participating. Firstly, I can see manipulations. Secondly, I don't see there will be any result. Thirdly, I don't see that this could stage a strong presidential canpaign".
In the view of Sannikov, it is necessary to have a strong democratic candidate. It is a secondary question if it will a single candidate.
