Shunevich: former policemen involved in Mahiliou rape

On Thursday, Belarusian Minister of Internal Affairs Ihar Shunevich commented on high-profile case of gang rape in Mahiliou. There were reports of law enforcement officers were involved in the crime. Shunevich said it was not the case:

"This did take place. The criminal case is under investigation. They are former police officers ... They were detained, arrested. Assessment of their actions will be given by the court, the prosecutor's office."

This incident was first reported by the newspaper "Evening Mahiliou". Three former policemen and one former employee of the Corrections Department raped a girl with whom one of them met in a disco club, and then made her drunk. The men took advantage of her helplessness. Rapists were detected with the help of CCTV cameras in the club. The criminal case was instituted under article "Rape Committed by a Group of Persons" (Part. 2, Art. 166 of the Criminal Code). The investigation is conducted by the Chief Investigation Department of the central office of the Investigative Committee.
