Statkevich appoints next action for October 10
A street action prepared by ex-political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich was held in Minsk Freedom Square on September 23. He called it “a voters’ meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka”. However, the state leader did not attend it.
Besides Statkevich, such opposition leaders as Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu, Anatol Lyabedzka and ex-emigrant Vyachaslau Siuchyk also made speeches there. They criticised Lukashenka’s policy and discussed the plans of allocating Russian military bases in Belarus which is a threat to Belarus’ independence. The opposition politicians urged people to be observers at the election and register possible violations.
From 150 to 300 people took part in the action, various sources report. Nyaklyayeu urged the present to come to Freedom Square on October 4 to protest against the creation of a Russian military base in our country. The next meeting will be held in Freedom Square on October 10, Statkevich said.
A policeman drew administrative violation reports against Mikalai Statkevich and Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu for the unauthorized action.
