Trawler sinks in Sea of Okhotsk: over 50 people dead
The reason for the catastrophe is unknown.
The huge refrigerator trawler Dalniy Vostok has sunk in the Sea of Okhotsk. The bodies of 54 sailors have been found in the water, RBK reports. 63 people have been rescued.
There could be 132 people on board the trawler.
The reason for the catastrophe is still unknown. The vessel sank because water had penetrated the engine room. Probably, too much ice hit the trawler.
26 fishing vessels are participating in the rescue operation.
Almost half of the sailors on board the trawler were not Russians. There were citizens of Myanmar, Vanuatu, Latvia and Ukraine in the crew.
