Two oppositionists detained in Vitsebsk
Two opposition activists on Saturday were detained in the nothern Belarusian city of Vitsebsk. Barys Khamayda, a local distributor of independent press, and Siarhei Kavalenka, a member of the Conservative Christian Party of the Belarusian Popular Front, were taken to a local police station, reports Belapan.
Around 11 a.m. Kavalenka came to the city center with a white-red-white flag. 12 minutes later, several police officers approached him and ordered to follow them to the police station.
Khamayda was detained near House No 28 on Lenin Street where he usually stands handing out independent newspapers. The police said he was detained in order to check if he is distributing the press legally.
However, the police also wrote in the protocol file that the oppositionist was wearing a white-red-white scarf and was standing under a huge white-red-white umbrella.
