Verkhovna Rada cancels notorious Kolesnichenko language law
The Russian language will lose its status of a regional language in Ukraine.
All official documents will have to be written in Ukrainian from now on. The Law on State Language Policy adopted on July 3, 2012 has been abolished, UNIAN reports.
It was explained by the fact that the law contradicted the Ukrainian Constitution and the European Charter on Regional and Literary Languages and was adopted due to a violation of the legal procedure.
The new law gives the Ukrainian language the status of the only state language and guarantees free development to national minorities’ languages.
Kolesnichenko language law was adopted in July 2012 which resulted in numerous protests. The Russian language achieved the status of a regional language in a number of Ukrainian cities and provinces back then.
