Victor Yanukovich signs law on amnesty
The Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on January 29.
Member of the Party of Regions and Ukrainian President’s representative in Parliament Yurii Miroshnichenko is the author of the law. There are 11 articles in the law and it cancels criminal responsibility for peaceful protesters for a number of crimes and administrative violations. However, they are expected “to perform a number of actions that will allow to restore the public order and normalize civil relations” in exchange, UNIAN reports. In particular, protesters will have to unblock all the streets and free the seized buildings.
People suspected of heinous crimes will not be amnestied.
The Verkhovna Rada adopted the law in two readings without discussing it on January 29. 232 out of 416 MPs registered in the session hall voted for it. The opposition flatly refused to support the draft.
